Cotton Candy Topiary
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 by Southern Girl
Another addition to my Sweet Shop Theme. But this time I decided on something a little lighter.
Doesn’t it look like Cotton Candy.
I just want to pull off a tuft and pop it in my mouth.
But then I remember it’s fur, not so tasty.
You can choose whatever colors of paint, and fur that you like I have listed the ones that I used in case you’d like to make a twin to mine.
I have my Topiary set up with some ceramic Easter Eggs Super Cute!
Items Needed:
1 Dozen Plastic Pastel Glitter Mini Eggs
Delta Gloss Varnish
Americana Acrylic Paint Poodle Skirt Pink
Styrofoam Ball 3″
1 Wooden Dowel 1/4″ x 12″
Clay Pot 7 cm
Pink Fun Fur Boa
White Fun Fur Boa
Wire Cutters
Hot Glue Sticks
Hot Glue Gun
Plastic Plates
Paint Brushes
Paper Towels
1. Get your Plastic Eggs Together.
- I bought mine at Hobby Lobby, they came in packs of 12.
- There’s no magic number, it just depends on how full you want your Topiary.
2. Get out your Pot and remove any dust or stickers.
3. Squirt the Poodleskirt Pink Paint onto a Plate.
4. Now you can paint your Pot.
- You will need to paint one coat and let it dry for about 20 minutes.
- Then add a second coat and let it dry for 20minutes.
- Now flip the Pot over and repeat with two coats on this side allowing 20 minutes of dry time for each coat.
- You only need to paint the outside, the inside will be covered up.
5. Now you can paint the Dowel Rods.
- You will need to paint one coat and let it dry for about 20 minutes.
- Then add a second coat and let it dry for 20 minutes.
- Now turn the Rod over and repeat with two coats on this side allowing 20 minutes of dry time for each coat.
6. Now it’s time for the top coat.
- This gives the Pot a little shine.
- Squirt the Gloss Varnish onto a Plate.
7. Paint the Varnish onto the pot.
- Hold it from the inside so you don’t get any fingerprints.
- Keep turning the pot until you have coated all sides with the Varnish.
8. Repeat the same process with the Dowel Rods.
- Let the Pot and Rods dry for 15 minutes.
9. Get out your Styrofoam Ball
- I used the kind that you get in the artificial flowers section of Hobby Lobby.
- I think this holds the Hot Glue better than the denser white Styrofoam that you find in the craft section.
- Cut the Ball in half with a pair of scissors.
10. Add Hot Glue to the rim of the Pot and glue down one of the Styrofoam halves to the Pot.
- The flat side should be on top.
11. Now you will need to decide how tall you would like your Topiary.
- Hold the Dowel next to the Pot to check the height.
- Use Wire Cutters to cut the Dowel to size.
12. Add Hot Glue to the bottom end of the Dowel and insert into the Styrofoam in the Center.
- Make sure to push the Rod all the way to the bottom.
13. Get the other half of your Styrofoam Ball.
- Add Hot Glue to the top end of the Dowel and insert into the Ball.
- Make sure to push the Rod almost to to the top, but not through.
- Add Hot Glue to the Ball in a line.
- Press the Boa onto the Glue.
- Make sure that all edges are Glued down.
15. Keep working around the Ball until all areas are covered including the bottom.
16. The top is now super furry and I like to trim it with a pair of scissors.
17. Now it’s time to add the Eggs.
- Add Hot Glue to the back of an Egg and place it on the Ball.
- Just start putting on Eggs where you like.
- I think it looks better free style and not in rows, but you’re the dreamer.
- Be sure to choose different colors of Eggs.
- Continue adding Eggs until your Ball is full.
18. Now to build the Nest at the bottom.
- Put some Hot Glue on top of the Styrofoam.
- Add the Pink Boa and wrap it around the Styrofoam
- Only do a small section at a time, the Glue dries fast.
- Make sure that all of the edges are Glued down.
19 . Now it’s time to start adding your Eggs.
- The placement is all up to you, just start putting the Eggs where you like.
- Once you have chosen your design add some Hot Glue to the bottom of the Egg and attach it to the foam.
- Just keep adding Eggs until your Nest is full.
20. Tada now your done.
