Chocolate Easter Egg Basket

This year for Easter I decided not to go for your typical pastel Easter Basket.

 I wanted something different.

More rustic

More decedent.

I wanted Chocolate.

So here is my dream a Chocolate Easter Basket that looks so good it makes my mouth water.

Items Needed:
8 Large Paper Mache Eggs
Scribbles 3D Paint Butterscotch
Scribbles 3D Paint Delicate Rose
Scribbles 3D Paint Hot Chocolate
Anita’s Acrylic Paint Espresso Bean
Anita’s Acrylic Paint Chocolate Brown
Flower Making Foam Block
1 Package Preserved Sheet Moss
Hot Glue Sticks
Hot Glue Gun
Easter Basket
Fuchsia Flowers
Plastic Plates
Paint Brushes
Paper Towels
Plastic Grocery Bags

1. Get all of your Paper Mache Eggs Together.

  • I bought mine at Hobby Lobby, the larger ones come separately so you can buy as many as you need to fill your Basket.
  • It’s a good idea to choose your Basket then see how many Eggs you’ll need.
  • My basket took 8 Eggs.

2. Squirt some paint onto a Plastic Plate.

  • Plates are great because you can throw them away when you’re done.

3. You will need to find something to let your eggs dry on.

  • Since they’re oval they tend to roll.
  • As you can see I like to use this large rubber mat.
  • It’ s supposed to be used in the kitchen as a slip proof mat and I believe it came from Target.
  • This is the best crafting invention ever, you can stand the eggs on end and they won’t roll.
  • You will need to paint one coat and let it dry for about 30 minutes.
  • Then add a second coat and let it dry for 30 minutes.
  • Now flip the egg over and repeat with two coats on this side allowing 30 minutes of dry time for each coat.

4. These are the colors I chose for the eggs.

  • Espresso Bean base with Delicate Rose Scribbles.
  • Buttermilk Base with Butterscotch Caramel Scribbles.
  • To do the detail on the eggs Use the scribbles 3D Paint and Paint designs on the eggs.
  • I wanted mine to look like creamy chocolate; so just swirl it on right from the bottle, it has a tapered tip.
  • Make sure you have a Paper Towel handy to clean the paint tip so you have smooth lines.
  • This takes longer than the paint to dry, mine took about 45 minutes.
  • The Scribbles only require one coat.

5. Chocolate Brown Base with Delicate Rose Scribbles.

6. Get out your Easter Basket.

  • I chose a more rustic one with brown tones.
  • It kind of looks like a nest at the top.

7.  Get your Flower Foam Block and Hot Glue it to the bottom of the Basket.

  • You can cut these to size just use a sharp knife and slice it like bread.

8. Now you will need to fill the space on either side of the Foam Block.

  • I like to use Plastic Grocery Bags, they’re free and you can always get more.
  • Just fold it into a nice neat square .
  • You’ll need one for each side.

9. Now Hot Glue each Bag to the bottom of the Basket.

  • This becomes the base for your Moss.
  • You might need more Bags depending on the size of your Basket.

10. Get your Moss out and remove it from the package.

  • I use the Preserved Sheet Moss.
  • I like the vibrant green color and it comes in a sheet which is easier to Glue.

11. Start off tearing pieces of the Moss to fit the Basket.

  • This makes it look more natural.
  • Put some Hot Glue on top of the Plastic Bag and Foam.
  • Only do a small section at a time, the Glue dries fast.
  • Make sure that all of the edges are Glued down.

12. Now it’s time to start adding your Eggs.

  • The placement is all up to you, just start putting the Eggs where you like.
  • Be sure to figure out your design before you Glue them down.
  • It’s sometimes easier to start with one central egg and then build from there.
  • Once you have chosen your design add some Hot Glue to the bottom of the Egg and attach it to the Moss.

13.  Now add the rest of your Eggs one at a time.

  • Keep in mind the placement.
  • Put the Egg in it’s place to see where it will touch the other Eggs.
  • Now add Hot Glue to the bottom of the Egg and the spots where it will touch other Eggs.
  • This makes your piece solid.

14. Just keep adding Eggs until your basket is full.

15. Now get your flowers ready.

  • I found these great Fuchsia Flowers that feel like suede.

16. You’re going to pull the flowers off of their stem.

  • You can keep the stems and leaves for another project if you like.

17. Now add a few flowers to the open spots between your Eggs.

  • Hot Glue the ends.
  • When you put the flower in the space it will attach to the side of the Eggs or Moss.

 Tada now your done.

  • It looks just like candy, I hope no one takes a bite.
